Mtskheta — Jvari: Day Trip from Tbilisi (Private Transfer)

Tour type: Cultural / Attraction tour • Duration: 6–8 hours • Distance: approx. 63 km (total driving distance for the route)

Introduction — Why take this tour?

This one-day tour brings you to Georgia's ancient capital, Mtskheta, and its surrounding sacred sites. It's perfect for history lovers, photographers looking for scenic shots, and anyone who wants a peaceful nature escape. The tour includes a private transfer, short local annotations at key sites, and some free time to sample local flavors (churchkhela and traditional dishes).

📍 Tbilisi – Jvari: 25 km

We suggest starting the trip at the ancient and impressive Jvari Monastery. The site is associated with monastic life since the 6th century and is renowned for its simple architecture and spectacular viewpoint. From the monastery plateau you can see the valley around Mtskheta and the confluence of the Aragvi and Mtkvari (Kura) rivers — where the different-colored waters meet is especially striking and makes for outstanding photos.

⚠️ Important: It is often windy at Jvari — we recommend bringing a jacket or windproof layer.

📍 Jvari – Mtskheta: 11 km

Next stop is historic Mtskheta — Georgia’s ancient capital and spiritual heart. The town center has been renovated and is tourist-friendly: narrow streets, family-run restaurants and local markets.

Be sure to visit the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century), which houses the Robe of Christ. The cathedral is famous for its unique frescoes with zodiac motifs and the burial vaults of the Bagrationi royal dynasty — one of the most important pilgrimage sites in Georgia.

Local markets and street stalls offer the chance to taste churchkhela and other traditional sweets — great edible souvenirs and gifts.

📍 Mtskheta – Samtavro: 2 km

Samtavro is a nunnery and a revered holy site. It is the burial place of King Mirian and Queen Nana, who officially adopted Christianity in Georgia in 324 AD. The monastery’s modest simplicity is its charm and represents a classic example of Georgian monastic tradition.

After your walk and sightseeing, the driver can take you to a family café by the river or to the well-known restaurant “Salobio,” where you can enjoy hot local dishes and traditional wine or homemade beverages.

📍 Mtskheta – Tbilisi: 25 km

Return to Tbilisi on the same day is included in the tour price. Return time depends on how long you spend at stops and whether you shop for food or souvenirs — we suggest planning roughly 6–8 hours for the full tour.
